Flying to Tignes

 

Nearest Airports:
​
  • Geneva Airport (GVA): Approximately 220 km (2.5-hour drive)

    • Geneva is the best option as it offers the most options for flights and transfers. It can be difficult to find transfer options from other airport to Tignes. ​

  • Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport (LYS): Approximately 220 km (3-hour drive)

  • Chambery Airport (CMF): Approximately 140 km (2-hour drive)

  • Grenoble Alpes-Isère Airport (GNB): Approximately 160 km (2.5-hour drive)

Shared Shuttles

Companies such as Ben’s Bus and Altibus offer shared shuttle services, which are more economical but may take longer due to multiple stops.

Car Rentals: Renting a car gives you the flexibility to explore the region at your own pace. Major car rental companies are available at all the mentioned airports. Ensure your rental includes snow chains or winter tires, as mountain roads can be challenging in winter.

Traveling by Train

​

  • High-speed TGV trains connect major French cities to the Alps. The closest major train station to Tignes is Bourg-Saint-Maurice, which is about 30 km from the resort. It is possible to arrange a transfer or taxi from here. 

  • Eurostar: During the ski season, the Eurostar runs direct trains from London to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, providing a convenient and scenic journey. Only on certain days. 

  • Go green. To travel in the most sustainable way to Tignes. Consider taking the train to Bourg St Maurice and an electric vehicle transfer to Tignes with Snowdrone or Coolbus. 

 

Driving to Tignes

 

Route Information:

  • From Geneva: Take the A41 motorway towards Annecy, then the N90 national road towards Albertville and Moûtiers, followed by the D902 up to Tignes.

  • From Lyon: Take the A43 motorway towards Chambéry, then the A430 to Albertville, and continue on the N90 and D902.

  • From Chambery: Follow the A43 motorway to Albertville, then the N90 and D902 to Tignes.

 

Parking in Tignes:

  • Parking Garages: Tignes has several parking garages in Tignes Le Lac, Val Claret, and other areas. Pre-booking is recommended during peak seasons.

  • On-Street Parking: Limited and often subject to restrictions. Make sure to check local signage.

 

Driving Tips:
​
  • Snow Chains: Essential for navigating snowy and icy roads. Practice fitting them before you travel.

  • Winter Tires: Highly recommended for better traction and safety.

  • Avoid of Mountain Cols during the winter. If you are coming from other parts of Europe. Make sure your navigation isn’t taking your over mountain cols that are shut during winter (Col Madeliene, Col D’Iseran, Comet de Roselind and Col de petit St Bernard).   • Make sure you use Google Maps or Waze to find the fastest route through Annecy. This can depend on the time of day, time of year and traffic conditions. 

  • Be aware of heavy traffic at the Swiss border at rush hours going into and out of Geneva. This can add at least 30 mins to your journey time. Between 7.00—8.30 entering Geneva and 17.00-18.30 leaving Geneva.

  • Altibus and Transavoie: These services run regular routes from Bourg-Saint-Maurice and other nearby towns to Tignes, making it easy to connect from long-distance coach services.

  • The helipad in Tignes is located in Val Claret. If you are staying at a luxury chalet or hotel with a driving service they will pick you up. Otherwise a taxi can be arranged to your accommodation. 

  • Due to a limited availability of slots at Geneva airport. Many operators fly from a neighbouring heliport which is a few minutes away from the airport by taxi. 

  • Be aware that the Helicopters wont fly in bad weather conditions. If this is the case a private transfer will be arranged.

Our Travel Tips

​

  • Peak Seasons: During peak seasons (Christmas, New Year, February school holidays), traffic can be heavy, and transfers may take longer. Plan extra travel time and book transfers in advance.

  • When booking flights consider the travel time to resort and your accommodation check in /check out time. 

  • Where possible, it’s best not to travel on a Saturday as this is the busiest day in the airports and on the road. This can add a considerable amount to your journey time.
